Yes 100%, we need an annual retreat here!
Introduction
Unlike many luxury hotels in Japan that place you at the centre of the city, Ritz Carlton Nikko gives you an opportunity to leave it all behind. Set on the shores of Lake Chuzenji within Nikko National Park, the hotel occupies one of Japan’s most culturally and naturally significant landscapes, where mountains, forests and volcanic hot springs converge.
Nikko itself has long been considered a place of retreat. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the area became known as Japan’s first international mountain resort, attracting diplomats and foreign embassies seeking cooler summers away from Tokyo. Today, remnants of this heritage remain in the villas and lakeside atmosphere that give the region a character unlike anywhere else in Japan.
Despite being surrounded by such history, Ritz Carlton Nikko never feels formal or imposing. Opened in 2020 as the brand’s first luxury onsen resort in Japan, the hotel blends contemporary luxury with local craftsmanship, natural materials and the rhythms of the surrounding landscape.

Staying here felt more like temporarily becoming part of Nikko itself, where mornings begin with mist rising from the lake and evenings end in the warmth of an onsen beneath the mountains.
Arrival and Check-In
After arriving at Nikko Station, we were met by the hotel’s complimentary shuttle for the journey up into the mountains. The drive takes around 45 minutes, winding through forested roads and climbing steadily towards Lake Chuzenji, but it never felt like a transfer. As cliché as it sounds, it became part of the anticipation. As the scenery shifted from town to dense greenery and mountain landscapes, the pace naturally slowed and created a sense of leaving everyday life behind.
By the time we arrived, the hotel appeared had quietly within the landscape. Our luggages were discreetly taken care of and we were guided into the serene lobby lounge where check in was handled efficiently out of sight. While the team completed the formalities, we settled into comfortable seating and were welcomed with thoughtfully prepared dried fruits, tea and a refreshing cold towel.

It was an arrival that immediately captured what makes The Ritz Carlton Nikko feel different. Nothing felt rushed, and at risk of sounding cliché once again, we felt a distinct sense of peace as soon as we entered the resort. Instead of standing at a counter completing paperwork, we simply arrived, paused and allowed the transition into Nikko’s slower rhythm to begin.
We were then swiftly led to our rooms and settled in immediately.

Lake Chuzenji View Room (1 King Bed)
Our Lake Chuzenji View Room immediately made us understand why people come to Nikko to slow down. Generously sized at around 57 square metres, the room was a contemporary mountain retreat, blending warm timber, natural stone, and subtle Japanese detailing with uninterrupted views across Lake Chuzenji.
What made the room feel especially memorable was how liveable it was. The engawa, a traditional Japanese transitional space between indoors and outdoors, quickly became our favourite place to spend our time. Conveniently, there is a glass sliding door between the bedroom and engawa which is especially effective for maintaining different temperatures across different parts of the room.

One one morning, I made a sencha and sat on the balcony watching the sun rise (at 4:30am in summer by the way) and to date, has been the most mesmerising experience.
The bathroom continued the same sense of calm with a deep soaking bath, separate rainfall shower, double vanity, and generous Diptique shower amenities.
Skincare products by Omnisens were thoughtfully provided, alongside exceptionally soft pyjamas that became an instant favourite.

Yukatas were also provided and could be worn throughout most of the hotel (except the restaurants), creating a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. There was something unexpectedly charming about seeing other guests moving through the property in elegant yukatas and they were surprisingly flattering on us.

Even the smaller details stood out. The towels were from Imabari, Japan’s most celebrated towel region known for producing exceptionally soft, highly absorbent towels with remarkable craftsmanship. And perhaps unexpectedly for a room with such beautiful views, the blackout curtains were outstanding, completely blocking out the early morning light and giving us some of the best sleep we had during the trip.
Ritz-Carlton Suite
We also had the opportunity to visit the Ritz Carlton Suite. At approximately 277 square metres, it is among the most expansive accommodations in Nikko and was an exceptionally designed private residence overlooking Lake Chuzenji.
The suite unfolds through distinct living, dining and sleeping spaces, yet never felt formal or oversized. Warm timber, textured stone and subtle Japanese craftsmanship create an atmosphere that feels deeply connected to place.

Floor to ceiling windows frame uninterrupted lake and mountain views, while the oversized engawa, becomes the natural centre of the suite.

The bathroom was equally extraordinary and felt almost onsen inspired in its scale and calmness, featuring a deep soaking bath, separate rainfall shower, expansive double vanities and beautifully considered storage and dressing areas. There was also a small gym and massage room.
The Ritz Carlton Suite felt luxurious not because of excess, but because it gives something increasingly rare, space, stillness and the feeling that there was nowhere else we needed to be.
Welcome Amenities, Minibar and Turndown Service
The welcome amenities felt exceptionally generous and immediately made the stay feel personal. Waiting in our room were beautiful presentation boxes filled with two of Japan’s most prized fruits, Kyoho grapes and Shine Muscat. Perfectly chilled and impossibly sweet, they were a celebration of Japanese seasonality and craftsmanship.

As my parents were celebrating their 40th anniversary, the hotel also surprised us with an elegant celebration cake, a thoughtful gesture that transformed our stay into something genuinely memorable.

The minibar was similarly well considered and reflected the hotel’s attention to detail. Tea, coffee and unlimited bottles of mineral water are complimentary, with premium sencha provided alongside a tea set. Alcoholic beverages were chargeable alongside local snacks.
Turndown service each evening was discreet and beautifully executed. Returning after dinner or the onsen, the room would be quietly transformed for the evening with refreshed amenities, neatly prepared sleepwear, replenished water and subtle touches that made everything feel reset and restful.
Breakfast
Breakfast at The Ritz Carlton Nikko became one of our favourite parts of the stay and perfectly reflected the slower rhythm of the property.
It is typically served at the Japanese restaurant, where guests can choose between beautifully prepared Japanese or Western set breakfasts, complemented by a small buffet.

What stood out was how local everything felt. Alongside fresh salads, seasonal fruit and light accompaniments, there was a selection of juices and dairy including premium Tochigi apple juice and locally produced Tochigi milk, both of which quickly became breakfast staples for us.
The Japanese breakfast felt especially fitting for the setting and was prepared with the same precision and quiet elegance found throughout the hotel.

On our second morning, we chose in-room breakfast and it ended up being one of our favourite moments of the stay. Sitting in the comfort of our room with the lake stretched out beyond the windows made the experience feel even more special.
What impressed us most was that the standards were not compromised simply because breakfast was served privately. The presentation remained beautiful, every element arrived at the correct temperature and the same attention to detail carried through from the restaurant.
There was something incredibly peaceful about enjoying a slow breakfast while watching the light change over Lake Chuzenji and it became one of those moments that captured exactly why we had come to Nikko in the first place.
Resort Activities
One of the things that makes the resort so special is that it encourages guests to experience Nikko rather than simply stay in it. The resort offers a thoughtful programme of seasonal activities designed to connect guests with the surrounding landscape and culture, including guided nature walks, cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, wellness activities and lake excursions that make full use of its remarkable setting on Lake Chuzenji. Daily complimentary activities are also run by the guest experience team - we took the Furoshiki wrapping class and it was incredibly practical!
We booked the Lake Chuzenji cruise expecting a peaceful boat experience, but due to unusually low water levels, the experience was adapted into a private mega paddleboard outing across the lake and, unexpectedly, it ended up becoming the highlight of our entire trip in Japan!
Everything was executed with incredible care. We were driven for about ten minutes by the hotel car to the other side of the lake and the team had thought of every detail before we even thought of it. Towels and warm puffer jackets were brought along, making the experience feel effortless despite being outdoors in the mountains.
In the middle of Lake Chuzenji, surrounded by mountains and complete stillness, the team stopped and prepared tea for us right there on the water. Sitting quietly with warm tea in hand while floating across the lake felt surreal and somewhat humorous.

Hotel Facilities and Onsen
Note: Media content of the Onsen and Spa area were taken with permission of the hotel, outside opening hours. Please do not take photographs or videos in the Onsen and Spa area during your stay.
The spa and onsen is one of the defining experiences of this property and a must-visit during every stay. Set against the backdrop of Nikko’s mountains, the space is calm and deeply connected to its surroundings rather than overly designed or theatrical.
At the centre of the wellness experience is the hotel’s natural onsen, supplied by the famous Yumoto Onsen source deep within Nikko National Park. What makes this especially remarkable is that the mineral rich water travels through one of Japan’s longest onsen pipelines before reaching the hotel, preserving a bathing tradition that has existed in this region for centuries.
The onsen itself includes both indoor and outdoor bathing areas. The indoor baths feel serene and sheltered, ideal for quieter moments, while the outdoor rotenburo became our favourite. Sitting in naturally heated water while surrounded by crisp, cold mountain air was surreal (it's starting to feel like the words surreal, stunning and calm keeps being repeated in this review but I guess thats just how we continually felt during our stay!). The transition between the warmth of the baths and the cool mountain atmosphere felt restorative in a way that is difficult to describe until you experience it.
Beyond the onsen, there are lockers, prep areas fully stocked with skincare and amenities, showers and saunas (and unlimited towels and washcloths).

Dining
Dining at The Ritz Carlton Nikko is exeptional and deeply connected to the landscape and slower rhythm of the destination. The property focuses on doing a small number of experiences exceptionally well, allowing ingredients, seasonality, and setting to take centre stage.

On our first evening, we dined at the Japanese restaurant and had the featured set menu. Beautifully prepared courses highlighted regional ingredients and was paired with premium beverages like the Queen of Blue grand royal tea.
What made the evening unforgettable was not only the food. As dinner unfolded, the sky outside transformed into the most extraordinary cotton candy sunset, with layers of soft pink, peach, and violet stretching across Lake Chuzenji. Even locals commented that conditions like this were rare to witness.
The team also provided another anniversary amenity, thoughtful and well coordinated with the other teams!

On the second evening, we experienced the featured set menu at The Lakehouse, whose atmosphere felt completely different but equally memorable. Inspired by the region’s historic lakeside retreats, the restaurant feels warm, relaxed and sophisticated. The menu celebrated local produce and seasonal ingredients in a more contemporary style while still remaining connected to Nikko’s natural surroundings.
Departure
Departure felt unexpectedly emotional, perhaps because the hotel had done such a good job of making us slow down and settle into the rhythm of the mountains. Before leaving, the team presented us with an omamori, a traditional Japanese charm believed to offer protection and good fortune. It was a thoughtful gesture and felt especially fitting after a stay that had been so connected to place and local culture.

We also couldn’t resist bringing home the hotel’s adorable Ritz Carlton lion mascots, adding them to our growing collection alongside the ones we had previously picked up in Fukuoka.

As we began the journey back down the mountain, omamori packed safely away and lions in hand, we made plans for our return, this time during autumn where the mountain transforms into an amber sanctuary!
Conclusion
Room: 10/10
The Lake Chuzenji View Room perfectly captured what makes Nikko so special, offering space, warmth and an incredible connection to the landscape. Thoughtful details such as the engawa lounging area, exceptionally comfortable sleep experience, generous amenities and beautifully designed bathrooms elevated every moment spent in the room.
Breakfast: 10/10
Breakfast struck the perfect balance between refinement and comfort, with beautifully executed Japanese and Western sets complemented by high quality local produce. The premium Tochigi apple juice and milk became memorable details in their own right. In-room breakfast was equally exceptional and proved that standards were never compromised away from the restaurant.
General Areas: 10/10
Every public space at The Ritz Carlton Nikko feels intentionally designed to celebrate its surroundings rather than compete with them. From the serene lobby to the panoramic lake views and elegant restaurants, the atmosphere encourages guests to slow down and stay present. The entire resort feels calm, cohesive and deeply connected to Nikko.
Facilities: 9.5/10
You may be thinking I took 0.5 away because the scores were looking too perfect, but I love a hotel pool to lounge in and that would have made the perfect score! Nevertheless, the facilities are beautifully executed and centred around wellness, nature and relaxation. The onsen experience (definitely makes up for the lack of pool), with both indoor and outdoor baths supplied by one of Japan’s longest onsen pipelines, was a true highlight, alongside the excellent spa and curated resort activities.
Service: 10/10
Service throughout the stay was exceptional and delivered with warmth, grace and effortless attention to detail. From adapting our lake experience into something even more memorable to thoughtful anniversary touches and meaningful departure gifts, every interaction felt genuine. This was hospitality that truly anticipated needs without ever feeling intrusive.
Value: 10/10
While undeniably a luxury stay, The Ritz Carlton Nikko delivers an experience that feels far greater than the room rate alone. Between the extraordinary setting, exceptional dining, thoughtful inclusions and memorable moments throughout the stay, it offered outstanding value for the level of experience received. This was one of the most memorable parts of our time in Japan.
