Introduction
There’s a different energy to Sanur these days. Long known as Bali’s quieter coastal enclave, the area is quietly reinventing itself as the island’s new centre for luxury wellness and medical tourism. At the heart of that transformation sits The Meru Sanur. Opened in 2024 on the storied grounds of the former Grand Inna Bali Beach, the all-suite beachfront resort is less like a hotel and more a carefully curated sanctuary designed for restoration, relaxation, and slow living.
The resort forms part of The Sanur Special Economic Zone, Indonesia’s first integrated wellness destination, where luxury hospitality sits alongside the newly developed Bali International Hospital, wellness facilities, and convention spaces. Yet despite its ambitious vision, it never felt clinical or overly polished. Instead, the property leans into a softer kind of luxury, shaped by tranquil gardens, ocean breezes, warm Balinese hospitality, and interiors that balance contemporary elegance with subtle local craftsmanship.

From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt intentionally calming. Open-air spaces framed the coastline, the sound of the waves drifted through the property, and wellness seemed woven naturally into every detail rather than presented as a trend. Spacious suites, serene pools, and thoughtfully designed communal areas created the kind of environment where days slowed down effortlessly.
For such a new resort, The Meru Sanur has already attracted significant international attention. In 2024, it received the “Luxury Wellness Resort 2024” title at the World Luxury Hotel Awards, recognition that reflects both the scale of its ambition and the quality of the experience it delivers. But beyond the awards, what makes the property memorable is the sense that it represents something new for Bali, a modern luxury retreat where wellbeing, hospitality, and place are seamlessly intertwined.
Arrival and Check-In
We arrived at The Meru Sanur just as the afternoon light began to soften, and from the moment we stepped out of the car, there was a sense that this would be more than just another hotel stay. The approach to the lobby felt almost ceremonial, with tranquil water features, tropical landscaping, and striking architecture (just look at the roof of the arrival lobby!) creating an immediate sense of arrival.
The lobby itself is breathtaking, a soaring space that blends contemporary design with traditional Balinese influences, creating an atmosphere that feels both grand and deeply serene. It was one of those rare arrivals where the pace of travel seemed to disappear almost instantly, especially after a long flight, replaced by a feeling of calm and anticipation for the days ahead.
What stood out most was the warmth of the welcome. Check in was seamless and unhurried, handled with a level of genuine hospitality that felt personal, which is what sets a luxury hotel apart. Every interaction was thoughtful and effortless, allowing us to settle into the rhythm of the resort from the very beginning.
Premier Tropical Suite
We stayed in the Premier Tropical Suite, and from the moment we opened the door, it felt more like a private residence, which is the gold standard for a good hotel suite. At 125 square metres, the suite is exceptionally spacious, with a separate bedroom and living area that allows you to truly settle in.
Floor to ceiling windows fill the space with natural light, while the private balcony overlooking the resort’s lush tropical gardens creates a constant connection to the outdoors. The design is understated and elegant, blending warm timber finishes, soft neutral tones, and contemporary Balinese touches that make the suite feel both luxurious and deeply relaxing.
The bedroom is centred around a king bed dressed in crisp linens, while the separate living area includes a comfortable sofa, dining table, writing desk, and ample space to unwind. A generous walk in wardrobe makes longer stays effortless, and every practical detail has been thoughtfully considered.
The marble bathroom feels almost spa like, featuring a separate soaking bathtub, rainfall shower, double vanity, plush bathrobes and slippers, and premium amenities. Modern comforts are equally well executed, with a 65 inch Smart LED television, high speed Wi Fi, in room safe, iron and ironing board, umbrella, tea and coffee making facilities, complimentary bottled water, and a (complimentary as well) stocked minibar included.
What we loved most, however, was how effortlessly the suite balanced scale with comfort. Despite its generous proportions, it never felt cavernous or impersonal. Whether enjoying a quiet morning coffee on the balcony, relaxing in the living room after a day exploring Bali or soaking in the bath before dinner, the suite consistently felt like a sanctuary. It was the kind of accommodation that made us look forward to returning each afternoon, and one that played a significant role in making our stay at the resort feel so memorable.
Welcome Amenities
One of the most thoughtful touches of our stay was the welcome setup awaiting us in the suite. As this was a birthday trip, the team had gone above and beyond to create a celebration that felt genuinely special from the moment we arrived. The suite was beautifully decorated with birthday garlands, balloons, and personalised celebratory touches that immediately transformed the space into something far more memorable than usual birthday stays.

The standout feature was an elegant bouquet of fresh flowers arranged in the suite. What impressed us most was learning that the resort can organise these at a fraction of what many local florists would charge, making it an excellent option for guests celebrating a special occasion. The flowers added a beautiful sense of occasion and brought even more warmth and colour to the suite's already serene interiors.

Waiting alongside the decorations was a generous fruit platter and a beautifully presented birthday cake, both thoughtfully prepared and ready for our arrival. These details may seem small individually, but together they created one of those rare hotel moments that feels deeply personal. Rather than simply acknowledging the occasion, the team had created a genuine celebration, and it immediately set the tone for the rest of our stay.
Breakfast
Breakfast quickly became one of the highlights of our stay and something we looked forward to each morning (who doesn't love breakfast). One of the unique benefits of staying at The Meru is that guests can choose to enjoy breakfast either at The Meru itself or at the neighbouring Bali Beach Hotel, providing an impressive variety of options and a refreshing change of scenery throughout a longer stay.
What stood out most was the sheer breadth of the offering. The buffet was beautifully presented and featured everything from tropical fruits and freshly baked pastries to Indonesian specialties, made to order egg dishes, fresh juices, and an extensive selection of international favourites. Despite the scale, it never felt overwhelming, with each station thoughtfully curated and consistently well executed.

Our favourite discovery was the selection of seasonal tropical fruits, particularly the mangosteens. Perfectly ripe and incredibly sweet, they became a non negotiable part of our breakfast each morning. Alongside the fruit station was a wonderful selection of traditional Balinese health drinks, offering an authentic taste of local wellness culture. These herbal tonics and natural elixirs felt like a refreshing alternative to the usual breakfast beverages and added a distinctive sense of place to the experience.

What impressed us most was how breakfast managed to feel both abundant and local. It would have been easy for a resort of this size to focus solely on international offerings, yet there was a genuine effort to showcase Balinese flavours and ingredients alongside the more familiar favourites. Whether enjoying fresh tropical fruit, sampling traditional health drinks, or simply taking in the relaxed atmosphere overlooking the gardens, breakfast was a leisurely start to the day. It was the kind of experience that encouraged us to linger a little longer each morning before heading out to explore Bali.
Hotel Facilities and Spa
The facilities are thoughtfully designed around wellness, relaxation and making the most of the resort's beachfront setting. At the heart of the property are the expansive swimming pools, which weave through the gardens and create a serene focal point for the resort.

Whether spending an afternoon lounging by the water, taking a leisurely swim, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, the pool areas never felt crowded and offered plenty of space to unwind. The resort also provides direct access to Sanur Beach and the beachfront promenade, making it easy to enjoy morning walks, cycling, or simply watching the sunrise over the ocean.
The hotel also has expansive grounds to explore, with intricate wooden structures that will be sure to appeal to those who love photography, or simply, to appreciate craftsmanship.
For those looking to immerse themselves further in Balinese culture, the resort offers a variety of wellness and recreational activities throughout the week. From fitness classes to cultural experiences and wellness focused programming, there is a genuine emphasis on helping guests connect with both the destination and their own wellbeing. We participated in traditional Balinese coconut leaf art, which wasnt just art but helped us understand Balinese cuture so much more.
The spa was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our stay. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with a refreshing ginger and tumeric herbal drink and a chilled towel before being introduced to the facilities. One of the standout features is the private wellness area, where guests can enjoy the sauna and cold plunge before and after treatments. The contrast between the warmth of the sauna and the invigorating cold plunge created a wonderfully restorative ritual that elevated the entire spa experience.
During our stay, we experienced the Marga Usug, Meru Jaga, and Les Wangi treatments, each drawing on traditional Balinese healing techniques while delivering the refinement expected of a luxury resort spa. The therapists were exceptional, combining technical expertise with genuine warmth and attentiveness. What impressed us most, however, was the level of care shown by the spa team beyond the treatments themselves.
On the day of our departure, after we had already checked out of our suite, the team graciously arranged for us to use one of the treatment rooms to shower and freshen up before our evening flight. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture that transformed what could have been a long and uncomfortable travel day into a seamless extension of our stay. That level of personalised service perfectly captured the spirit of The Meru Sanur. The only minor criticism was that a few of the spa towels carried a slight damp smell, which felt somewhat out of place given the otherwise impeccable standards throughout the facility. It was a small detail in an otherwise outstanding experience. Between the excellent treatments, the beautiful wellness facilities, and a spa team that consistently went above and beyond, the spa became one of the defining highlights of our time at The Meru Sanur.
Dining
Over the course of our visit, we had the opportunity to experience each of the resort's dining venues. What impressed us most was the variety on offer, with each restaurant having its own distinct identity while maintaining the same high standard of service and presentation.
Arunika, the resort's all day dining restaurant, is where breakfast is served and offers an extensive selection of both international and Indonesian cuisine throughout the day. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it an easy choice for a casual lunch or dinner. The menu is broad enough to cater to a range of tastes, while still incorporating local flavours and ingredients.
Roso Restaurant provides a more refined dining experience, showcasing Indonesian cuisine through a contemporary lens. The dishes are beautifully presented and offer a wonderful introduction to the richness and diversity of Indonesian flavours. It is an excellent option for guests looking to explore local cuisine in an elegant setting.
The standout dining experience for us, however, was Sulasih, the resort's beachfront grill restaurant. Set directly along the water's edge, it delivers exactly the kind of atmosphere many travellers imagine when dreaming of a luxury Bali holiday.
As the sun begins to set and the sky changes colour over the ocean, the restaurant takes on a magical quality. The sound of the waves, gentle sea breeze, soft lighting, and uninterrupted beachfront views create an ambience that is difficult to replicate.

While the menu features an excellent selection of grilled seafood, premium meats, and fresh local ingredients, it was the setting that truly elevated the experience. We found ourselves lingering long after the meal had finished, simply enjoying the atmosphere.
The resort's bars and lounge spaces also deserve mention, offering excellent cocktails and relaxed settings for a pre dinner drink or nightcap. Taken together, the dining venues at The Meru Sanur provide enough variety that guests could comfortably spend several days dining entirely within the resort without feeling repetitive. While each restaurant brought something different to the table, Sulasih was undoubtedly the venue we returned to most fondly, thanks to its exceptional beachfront setting and memorable evening atmosphere.
Departure
Departure is often the part of a hotel stay that receives the least attention, but at The Meru Sanur, it felt every bit as thoughtful as the arrival. Check out was smooth and efficient, with the team handling everything with the same warmth and professionalism we had experienced throughout our stay. There was no sense of being hurried out the door, allowing us to enjoy our final morning at a relaxed pace.
As mentioned in the Spa section, we had a later flight, one of the most appreciated gestures came from the spa team, who kindly arranged for us to use one of the treatment rooms to shower and freshen up before heading to the airport. It was a small act of hospitality, but one that made a significant difference after a day spent enjoying the resort's facilities following check out. Rather than feeling like our holiday had ended the moment we handed back our room key, we were able to continue enjoying the property right up until it was time to leave.
As we made our way through the lobby one final time, passing the tranquil water features and beautifully landscaped grounds that had welcomed us days earlier, there was a genuine sense of reluctance to leave. The Meru Sanur excels at creating an atmosphere of calm and comfort, and by the end of our stay, the resort felt remarkably easy to call home. It was the kind of departure that leaves you already thinking about when you might return, which is perhaps the strongest endorsement any hotel can receive.
Conclusion
Room: 9/10
We found the rooms at The Meru Sanur incredibly spacious, calming, and beautifully designed. The plush bedding, elegant interiors, and luxurious bathroom made it feel like a true retreat after long days exploring Bali or even just lounging by the pool. We especially loved the seamless mix of modern luxury and tropical Balinese warmth throughout the space. A few small finishing details and occasional inconsistencies like damp bedding kept it just shy of perfection.
Breakfast: 10/10
Breakfast was easily one of the highlights of our stay. We loved the huge variety of options, from fresh tropical fruits (especially the mangosteens!!) and pastries to made-to-order dishes and local Indonesian favourites. Everything felt fresh and high quality, and the poolside (overflowing to the beach) views made each morning feel relaxed and indulgent. The attentive service elevated the entire experience even further.
General Areas: 9/10
We were immediately impressed by how peaceful and refined the resort felt. The lush landscaping, elegant architecture, and beautifully maintained beachfront spaces created a calm and luxurious atmosphere throughout the property. We especially enjoyed how spacious the resort felt overall, although some shared areas became slightly busier during peak times.
Facilities: 8.5/10
The facilities were excellent and added a lot to the overall experience. We particularly enjoyed the pools, wellness areas, and direct beach access, all of which felt modern and well maintained. The resort’s wellness focus gave the stay an extra sense of relaxation. At busier times, a few facilities felt slightly crowded (especially the Bali Beach Hotel pool), which is the only reason it did not score higher.
Service: 10/10
The service truly stood out to us from the moment we arrived. Every staff member we encountered was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. We appreciated how personalised the hospitality felt, with staff consistently going above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable. The level of professionalism and friendliness made a lasting impression on us. On the day of our check out, they personally brought us our new room keys during breakfast so that our access to the room during the late check out hours were seamless.
Value: 10/10
Considering the luxurious rooms, exceptional service, beautiful beachfront setting, and high-quality facilities, we felt The Meru Sanur offered outstanding value for a luxury resort experience in Bali. The overall experience exceeded our expectations, and we left feeling that every part of the stay was worth it. We would definitely return!
